HEROES    CALLINGS    ARBITER

Code of Honor

Code of Glory    Code of Justice

Requires: Honor ideal, or No Glory Without Honor

If you choose this Code as a starting hero, you know Code of Honor and its spells. Otherwise, you can learn Code of Honor with XP—so long as you have the Honor ideal or an ability that unlocks it.

Code of Honor

Will  This ability grants two spells: 𐎺 Contract and 𐎺Duel.

𐎺Contract   |   SOULSIGHT  4

As part of casting this spell, you Persuade a character to follow an agreement with terms that you specify. If you struggle or fail to Persuade the character, this spell is wasted and you lose all soulsight. If you successfully Persuade the character, make a free Compel roll to magically bind them to the agreement. If the character has the Honor ideal, this action automatically succeeds. Success: The character is magically bound to follow the agreement to the best of their ability as long as they live, or until you choose to release them from the terms of the agreement.Struggle: The character can take -1 spirit to rebuff your magic. Failure:  No effect.

𐎺Duel   |   SOULSIGHT  1

Roll Compel to magically challenge a character to face you in single combat. When you make this challenge, specify the condition of the duel’s ending: to submission, or to the death. If the character has either the Honor or Glory ideals, you automatically succeed.Success: The foe enters the duel (see below). As a free action, make an Initiative roll against the character you’re dueling to determine who strikes first. Struggle: The character(s) can take -1 spirit to rebuff your magic. Failure:  No effect.Once the duel begins, other NPCs won’t interfere or help the character you’re dueling. Your opponent can attack with melee or ranged weapons, and they can make use of high ground or thresholds. However, they can’t Hide or move away from you to another span. The duel ends and you lose all soulsight if:
  • You Hide or move away from the character
  • You take a hostile action against any other character
  • Your allies interfere or take hostile actions against your opponent

Abilities to Learn

.5xp new ability  |  10xp with attribute increase

You must know Code of Honor before learning the abilities in this section.

Honorable Constitution

✦✧ Strength  Gain +2 max Life.

Stand Your Ground

✦✧ Will  Requires Honor ideal. When you Stand fast and invoke Honor, you can take -1 awareness instead of -1 spirit. Also, allies who can see and hear you can use your ideal die as an advantage die to Stand Fast themselves.

Vow

✦✦✧ Will  Gain +1 maximum Spirit. When you use this ability, reduce your maximum Spirit by 2 and swear upon your honor to accomplish an objective. Based on the scope of your vow, the Guide awards you a vow die. Note this die on your character sheet, along with the vow you’ve taken. You can only take one vow at a time. Once you fulfill a vow, you can’t take another until the next Downtime. Your vow must have a clear and realistically achievable end condition. “I vow to avenge my brother’s death!” is an acceptable vow, but “I vow to bring peace to the Skysea” is too vague. The vow die is a d4, d6, or d8. The Guide decides its size based on how specific in scope your vow is. The more specific, the larger the die. For example, “I vow to defeat you in single combat, traitor!” might yield a d8, while “I vow to destroy the Empire of Mazr!” would yield a d4.Roll the vow die whenever you invoke Honor in service of your vow. This die serves as an additional advantage die, along with your ideal die.  Fulfilling your vow grants you back the max Spirit you sacrificed to make your vow, along with +3 overflow spirit. However, be wary of making vows that might go forever unfulfilled—there’s no other way to regain this maximum Spirit!

Strength of Character

✦✦✦✧ Will  Gain +1 max Life and +1 max Stamina.

No Honor Without Power

Intellect  Your experience has led you to conclude that Honor is impotent puffery without Power to back it up.  When you learn this ability, you also learn the Code of Power ability and its spells. You can subsequently learn other abilities from the Code of Power. (You don't gain the Power ideal, however.)
