As a group, if you have experience playing When Sky & Sea Were Not Named, you can choose to start the game at Level 2 or Level 3. Create a starting hero, then use the guidelines here to advance them.
Level 2
Your hero starts with:
+1 ✪ability
15 attribute points
+2 imperial credits OR +1 revelation
Follow the same rules as a starting hero in terms of your minimum and maximum starting attributes, including the special rules for giant heroes.
Level 3
Your hero starts with:
+2 extra ✪abilities
16 attribute points—one of which can be as high as 6
+2 imperial credits OR +1 revelation
+2 imperial credits OR +1 revelation (choose again)
Level 3 PlusFor more complexity at the start of the game, use one or both options:
+2 imperial credits OR +1 revelation (choose a third time)
Your investments are worth 4 credits (you’ve cashed them in)
Giant Heroes at Level 3If you’re a Shinarian starting at Level 3:
Your Grace can be as high as 2.
If you are ✪Massive, your Grace is 1, AND both of your extra ✪abilities offer marks of Strength, your Strength can be as high as 8.
If you’re a✪Big Zordin starting at Level 3:
Your Grace can be as high as 3.
If your Grace is 2 and both of your extra abilities offer marks of Strength, your Strength can be as high as 8.
Don’t Start with Marks
When you start at a higher level, you don’t start with any marks of experience—not even those from your extra abilities. These guidelines assume you have optimally allocated all available marks before the game starts to achieve the attributes you want.
Revelation Constraints
The Guide may constrain the nature of the extra revelations you can start with. limiting them (for example) to:
The Kananite origin (regardless of your origin), reflecting your adventures throughout the realm before the game starts
A specific list, reflecting a shared backstory, occupation, or exposure to experts (for example, Ballooning, Crafting, Navigation, Path of Air, Politics, Skysailing, and Trade, if the heroes start as members of a skyship crew)
No constraints—the extra revelations can be from any origin!
Your extra revelations can always come from books you start with.
