Resting requires at least a few hours in a safe place, with plenty of room to stretch your legs. When you rest: - You regain all your attributes, including strength and spirit, up to their max—but you lose any overflow you’ve accumulated.
- You can heal yourself.
- You can perform one rest activity.
Regain your attributes before you heal or perform a rest activity. Aside from recovery, resting is a chance to bond with your allies and learn new lore. But finding a place to rest might be an adventure unto itself! You can’t rest on a cramped hot-air balloon. You might be able to rest on a well-appointed skyship, but certainly not if it’s skysailing in bad weather. Some abilities grant boons that take effect when you rest. For example, Kananites benefit from the ✪Blessing of Adod when they rest, and Masterminds can devise ✪Stratagems when they rest. These effects do not count as rest activities—they just happen. Make sure to take advantage of these abilities! One rest for the weary. A rest is a fuzzy abstraction for a period of respite. It might last a few hours or stretch into many days. The duration is deliberately inexact. Crucially, rests must end—not be strung together indefinitely. The Guide has full dispensation to keep it moving and thrust heroes back into danger after their rest! While resting, you can heal by taking -1 strength or -1 spirit. - Brace yourself with Compel advantage
- Add your core Strength or Spirit (whichever you reduced) to the result
Use this result, 1-for-1, to remove deathmarks or—if you have no deathmarks remaining—recover life up to your maximum. You can heal multiple times during a single rest, as long as you have strength or spirit to spare. While resting, you can perform one rest activity. Many rest activities are enabled by ✪abilities from your calling or lore, and call for you to roll one or more of your action dice. The Guide might offer special rest activities based on your circumstances in an adventure. In addition, any hero can perform one of the following rest activities to gain a revelation—that is, a piece of lore. When you collect 3 revelations about a given type of lore, you learn that lore and its starting ability! Study a BookSpend your rest studying a book written in a script you know how to read. You gain 1 revelation from the book’s listed options (no roll required). Books and the revelations they contain are detailed in Items & Conveyances. Learn from Other CharactersSpend your rest under the tutelage of a willing teacher, assisting a friendly community in a lore-based task, or helping another hero perform their own lore-based activity. Describe to the Guide how you learn from them to gain 1 revelation for the lore in question (no roll required). You and another hero can learn from each other as a joint rest activity. For example, if you know The Shield and a fellow hero knows Insurgency, you can spend your rest practicing ambushes and defensive tactics, each gaining 1 revelation for the other’s lore. But you can’t learn about Insurgency from a fellow hero who spends their rest activity doing something unrelated, like studying a book! You can also take the Help basic action as your rest activity to assist a fellow hero with their rest activity from lore-based ✪ability. For example, if a fellow hero composes a ✪Song of Heroes, you can Help them as your own rest activity, gaining a revelation for Song in the process. But you can’t Help a hero performing a solitary rest activity, like performing ✪Divination (Time). Guide: The villagers emerge from hiding and get to work preparing the feast as the old priest makes the rounds blessing everything—the bread, the wine, the water, the olives the people haul out from their cellars. Chom and Wandu, you’re both invited to join in these preparations. Would you like to spend a rest activity helping them prepare and learning their ways?
Matreyis: Wait, what about me?
Guide: My ibis-headed friend, you’re from the Empire. The villagers are mostly rebels—that’s why they had places to hide. The old priest seems genuinely fond of you, but everyone else gives you the side-eye.
Matreyis: Even after I helped deal with their ghoul problem, huh.
Guide: You could try Persuading them to accept you.
Matreyis: Nuts to that. I’ll just read my book, The Traveler’s Tale. I want to study about Navigation, and I doubt anyone here knows anything about that.
Wandu: What can these villagers teach us?
Guide: The priest would be delighted to teach you about the mystery and majesty of Lord Adod. He’s also not bad at singing a catchy Song. And from the villagers collectively, you can learn a bit about Civilization.
Wandu: I like the sound of catchy songs! I’ll learn a Song revelation. I’m sure I’ve heard all kinds of crazy tunes in the Chaos realm—maybe I can help him spice up his hymns.
Guide: And you, Chom?
Chom: I would never miss the chance to partake in feast and song. But I feel my efforts are better spent on my Panoply ability, ✪Preparing for Battle, than preparing food and learning things. (Rolls a d10). A 7. I polish my bronze to a handsome sheen. But … I can still eat the feast, right?
