Champion

Starting abilities: ✪ Mighty Blow, ✪ Only a Scratch!
Key attributes: Spirit, Strength

Charging into battle in gleaming bronze armor, invincible behind a heavy shield and long spear, weaving deftly between foes with sickleswords flashing, or smashing their way through enemy forces with a huge mace—however armed and armored, Champions are bold heroes and masters of melee combat.

Champion-Aligned Lore

When you start the game as a Champion, at least one of your chosen lore types must be from this list, and it must be from your origin.

Ask the Guide:

Who among these people has seen battle?
Where's a good place to fight?
How can we smash our way through?
Who seems mightier?

Abilities to Learn

✪ Mighty Constitution

✪ Nigh Invulnerable

Starting Abilities

✪ Mighty Blow

Starting ability

Take -1 strength or -1 spirit before you Attack. On a hit, inflict extra grace damage equal to half your core Strength (round down). On a lethal hit, Brace yourself as a ↻ reaction and inflict the result as extra life damage.

You can invoke an ideal on the extra-damage ↻ Brace roll!

✪ Only a Scratch!

Starting ability

When you suffer life damage, take -1 strength or -1 spirit to reduce the damage by 3.

Abilities to Learn

✪ Arms of Bronze

Mark of STRENGTH

Your Attacks inflict an extra -1 life on a lethal hit, or an extra -2 life if you use Mighty Blow.

✪ Battle Cry!

Mark of SPIRIT

Take -1 strength or -1 spirit and Compel yourself with Brace advantage. Gain battle-focus equal to your result. You can then spend this focus to immediately Charge! or Rally! as a ➟following action, or on subsequent turns as your normal action. You must come up with your battle cry before using this ability, and you must actually be engaged in battle to use it. You lose all battle-focus when the battle ends, as determined by the Guide.

Charge! • 1 battle-focusYou run toward a foe in the Fray and Attack them. You must have at least 1 grace and be able to move to use this technique.

On a lethal hit, you inflict extra life damage equal to your core Spirit.
On any hit, Shove (Brace) the foe as a ➟following action, adding your core Spirit to the result.
If you miss, however, you suffer -1 grace.

In the same round, any number of allies can heed your cry and Charge! alongside you, with the same benefits and risks detailed above. (Your allies add their core Spirit, not yours, if they Shove the foe on a hit.)

Rally! • 1 battle-focusYou Stand Fast and add your core Spirit to your result. In the same round, any number of allies can heed your cry and Stand Fast too, adding their own core Spirit to their results. You and your allies still must take -1 strength to Stand Fast.

✪ Chosen Weapon

Mark of SPIRIT

Choose a weapon you have wielded in battle.

Your Attacks with this weapon inflict an extra -1 life.
Before you Attack with your chosen weapon, you can take -1 awareness to gain a +2 bonus on the roll.

If you know ✪Battle Cry!, you can spend 1 battle-focus instead of taking -1 awareness to gain the Attack bonus. If your chosen weapon is destroyed or lost, you can bond with a new chosen weapon the next time you rest. You can only have one chosen weapon at a time.

✪ Desperate Strike

Mark of STRENGTH

Before you Attack, you can take -1 grace to increase the attack’s grace damage by 1 and its life damage by 2. You can take -2 grace to use the ✪Mighty Blow ability, instead of taking its normal cost of -1 strength or -1 spirit. You can’t reduce your grace below zero with this ability.

✪ Gathering Might

Mark of STRENGTH

If you Stand Fast (Brace) and have at least 1 defense-focus left at the start of your next turn, you can strike a Mighty Blow on that turn without taking that ability’s normal cost of -1 strength or -1 spirit.

✪ Heart of Bronze

Mark of SPIRIT

This ability yields two benefits:

Your max Life increases by 3.
When you use Only a Scratch!, you reduce life damage by 4.

✪ Legs of Bronze

Mark of STRENGTH

This ability yields two benefits:

When you Shove (Brace) a foe, inflict an extra -1 grace.
