Over multiple sessions of play, heroes advance, becoming more powerful, knowledgeable, and skilled. A hero advances in three ways, by gaining:
The Guide mediates each form of advancement based on what happens in the adventure. They determine the pace and what kinds of advancement are available to the heroes. This table shows a typical pace for advancement, where a “session” lasts 3 or 4 hours of real-time play.
- Levels which yield new ✪abilities from your origin, calling, or lore.
- Marks of experience that increase your attributes
- Revelations that expand your knowledge of lore

Along with the mark you gain every session, learning a new ✪ability grants an additional mark. Some abilities also grant revelations. Also, the Guide might award additional marks or revelations at their discretion for especially heroic deeds, hard labor, or intensive study.

Level & Abilities
Your origin, calling, and lore offer starting ✪abilities that you know when you start the game. These aspects also include additional abilities you can learn as you progress through your adventure and gain a level.
Gaining a level—and thus, an ability—should happen at milestones that culminate your adventure’s progress over three or four sessions of play. Some possible milestones:
Your level doesn’t interact with the game mechanics at all. It’s simply a way to track how many new abilities your hero has learned and how powerful they’ve become—which in turn helps the Guide balance the danger of foes you face.
- The Guide determines when you gain a level.
- You choose which ✪ability you learn among those available from your origin, calling, and lore.

- Defeat a powerful foe, or survive a battle with one
- Uncover a major mystery about the world
- Reach your primary destination after a long journey

You start at Level 1, regardless of how many starting abilities you have.
Marks of Experience
Marks of Experience
Marks of experience—that is, marks of Awareness, Spirit, Strength, or Grace—are another form of advancement. You can increase a core attribute by 1 by spending a number of corresponding marks equal to the new score. The higher your attribute, the more marks you need to increase it. For example, to increase your core Strength from 4 to 5, you need to spend 5 marks of Strength. To increase it again, to 6, you’d need to spend 6 additional marks.
Shinarians and some Zordin require more marks to increase their Grace.
Gaining Marks
At the end of each session—unless nothing exciting or risky happened— each hero gains 1 mark of their choice. You also gain a mark each time you gain a level and learn an ✪ability, in addition to the end-of-session mark. The ability says which type of mark you gain this way. For example, if you learn the Champion ability ✪Gathering Might, you also gain 1 mark of Strength. If you learn The Sword lore ability ✪Precision Thrust, you gain 1 mark of Awareness. You gain this mark in addition to the usual mark you gain from playing through the session. (Starting abilities don’t grant marks.)Gaining Marks
Roleplaying marks. As part of an end-of-session or beginning-of-session ritual, each player can briefly tell how their hero grew in the attribute they chose, connecting the mark into something that occurred during the session.
Increasing Action Die Sizes
When you increase an attribute, check the calculation for your action dice. The size of your action dice may increase as a consequence. For example, if you have Awareness 3, Grace 4, and a d6 Maneuver die, and you increase your Awareness to 4, your Maneuver die becomes a d8. Some ✪abilities add to an action die’s calculation. If the calculation for an action die results in a sum of 16 or higher, the die becomes a d20. Increasing Action Die Sizes
Increasing Life and Weight
These stats change when you use marks to increase your Strength or Spirit. Increasing Life and Weight
- When you increase your core Spirit by 1, your max Life also increases by 1.
- When you increase your core Strength by 1, your Weight also increases by 1, and consequently your max Life increases by 2.
You always round down your action die calculation to an even number as you advance this way.
Revelations
Revelations
Revelations are pieces of a lore’s puzzle. You can gain revelations when you study books or learn from other characters during a rest activity (see the Recovery & Rest section). Some ✪abilities also yield a collection of revelations. When you gain 3 revelations about a given lore, you learn the lore, its starting ✪ability, and any language or literacy it grants. You don’t gain the lore’s starting items, however.
List your revelations alongside your lore on your Hero Sheet.
