General Items

Books

Literacy is extremely rare in the Skysea, but books are available in various marketplaces. Some of the most popular such books are listed here. (Books in the Skysea are not bound like modern books with pages and such; rather, they’re written on long papyrus scrolls or carved into clay tablets.)References & Revelations. Most books contain references to a couple types of lore. These references are listed after the titles. Studying a book as an endeavor converts one of its references to a revelation. You can only gain 1 revelation from each of these books’ listed references. Studying the same book twice can’t yield a second revelation for the same lore reference. Starting books. If you start the game with one of these books, you start with literacy in its writing system—but you don’t start with any revelations.

The Recovery & Rest section explains how studying works as an endeavor.

Mazrian Books

COST 1𐤑 These popular books are written in Glyphs on papyrus scrolls. The Book of Good Death. A mystical tome about how to prepare bodies for death and what awaits souls in the afterlife. Medicine 2, Death 1.The Clever Peasant. A poor man is extorted by a powerful noble and must appeal to imperial officials for justice using only his wits and eloquent speeches. Politics 2, Civilization 1. Glory of the Scribe. A wealthy factotum tries to persuade her daughter to become a scribe instead of toiling as a poor craftswoman, but her argument isn’t convincing. Civilization 2, Crafting 1. Hymn to the Sun. A book of poetry praising the sun in all its multifaceted glory. Solar Circle 2, Song 1. Practical Magic. An instruction manual for the operation of various imperial implements and hot-air balloons— somewhat outdated, unfortunately. Ballooning 1, Crafting 1, Scrolls of the Sorcerer 1. The Ill-Fated Follower (Skysailing, Monsters). A plucky skysailor is shipwrecked on a mysterious, treasure-filled island deep in the Chaos, where he must find favor with a Face of Yom to survive and return home. Monsters 1, Navigation 1, Skysailing 1.The Traveler’s Tale (Navigation, Wisdom of Adod). A royal servant flees the Empire and ends up lost in the realm of Tel-Kanan, where he makes some interesting friends but eventually becomes desperately homesick. Civilization 1, Navigation 1, Wisdom of Adod 1.

Kananite Books

COST 1𐤑 These traditional texts are written in Forms, sometimes on clay tablets and otherwise on papyrus scrolls. The Lord’s Triumph. A famous epic poem about Adod’s victory over the gods of Chaos and Death in a series of cosmic battles, and his creation of Tel-Kanan. Lord Adod 2, Dream 1.The Lost Son. A wise and just town chief’s prayers for a son are answered—but the son grows up to be foolhardy and is killed by the goddess Anat for his impudence. Civilization 1, Death 1, Politics 1. The Old Kings List (Code of the Clay King, Politics, Trade). A history or genealogy of sorts, dubious in its details, which traces the ancestry of legendary Kananite merchant-princes to even more distant figures from the Kingdom of Shinar. Code of the Clay King 1, Politics 1, Trade 1. The Ballad of Melkort (Forestcliffs, Song). A tall tale of the legendary Kananite merchant-prince and demigod Melkort, said to be the son of Lord Adod, who travels across the nascent realm—often by literally jumping from floating island to floating island—fighting monsters and planting olive trees for later explorers to use as hot-air balloon fuel. Forestcliffs 1, Navigation 1, Song 1.

Magical Texts

These three books are much longer, and rarer, than the other books listed here and aren’t available for purchase. If you find one of these books or start the game with one, it contains 3 references to its eponymous lore, which means another hero can learn that lore by studying the book over 3 rests. The books also contain 1 reference to each lore listed below:Code of the Clay King. This austere tablet is written in dense, stark Forms. Civilization 1, Crafting 1, Medicine 1, Politics 1, The Stone 1, Time 1. Scrolls of the Sorcerer. This heavy set of scrolls is written in tiny, flowery Glyphs. The Bow 1, Civilization 1, Crafting 1, The Hand 1, Medicine 1, Navigation 1, Path of Air 1, The Sling 1, Solar Circle 1.Wisdom of Adod. This chunky set of scrolls appears to be written in an odd, extremely repetitive set of Glyphs. You must be literate in Oxhouse to decipher its eponymous revelations. Undeciphered, it yields: Lord Adod 1.

Cloakcraft

Cloakcraft are items used for skullduggery and the like, requiring a great deal of specialized knowledge to deploy. You can buy them with credit, but they're useless unless you know The Cloak lore.

Disguise

COST 1𐤑 CRAFT 1𐤇 (requires The Cloak lore)The disguise effectively conceals your identity from a distance. Up close, it enables you to Deceive to avoid the notice of characters who would recognize you on sight. The disguise can also, potentially, enable you to pass as someone of a different origin—though in the case of disguised Shinarians and Mazrians, some explanation (and a penalty to your Deceive roll) may be in order, at the Guide's discretion. It takes about 10 minutes to put on the disguise. You can modify the disguise to look like another person or origin as a rest endeavor.

Poison

The smoke clears at the start of your next turn, or earlier if subjected to a strong wind.

Other General Items

Gift (Keepsake)

COST 1𐤑 CRAFT 1𐤇 A thoughtful gift can buoy the spirits of both the recipient and the giver. You can purchase a gift from a market with credit, or create a gift yourself with crafting resources. You can also give your starting keepsake as a gift.Choose your gift. A gift takes the form of a keepsake from a particular origin. See the Origins chapter for examples. Choose the form of your keepsake and the origin it’s tied to when you purchase or craft it. Giving a gift. You must Compel yourself to thoughtfully present the gift.

Gain a +2 bonus if the recipient is from the same origin as your keepsake.
Take a -2 penalty if you’re in battle with the recipient; you must use your action to present the gift, and if you’re not carrying it, you must take -1 grace to dig it out of your pack.

On a 4 or higher, the recipient’s regard for you improves—from hostile to wary, or from wary to friendly. If the recipient is already friendly with you, or if they’re one of your heroic allies, both you and the recipient gain +1 overflow spirit. On a 3 or lower, the intended recipient may refuse the gift in an offended huff, toss it aside, keep it with a condescending smile, or some other reaction as determined by the Guide. No regifting. Once presented to someone as a gift—successfully or unsuccessfully—a keepsake can never be gifted again. Don’t be tacky.

Harness

COST – CRAFT 1𐤇 (requires The Riding lore)If you fall off your mount while you wear a harness, you remain attached to the creature and can Rush to climb back onto it on your next turn.

Investment

COST 1𐤑 (requires Trade lore) An investment is worth 1 credit now, or 4 credits later—if you can transport it to a market or a trader willing to buy it.

You can convert 1 investment to 1 credit at the start of the game.
You need to transport an investment to a civilized place to get its higher value. (This place can’t be where you start the game.)
You can purchase new investments if you have the Trade lore.

Your investment might take the form of bulk cargo, a case of sensitive imperial scrolls, or a precious gemstone. Talk to the Guide about what your investment looks like—and what the likelihood is that you’ll actually be able to collect its full value at a new location during the adventure.

Old Coin

COST 1𐤑 (requires The Cloak or Trade lore to purchase) This cast bronze coin shows a ziggurat on one side and the visage of a bearded king on the other side. The king has a tall crown and a serene smile. It’s probably valuable to an antiquities dealer, but you don’t want to part with it. While you hold the coin, you can freely invoke the Power or Justice ideals when you Persuade (Compel) someone, without taking -1 spirit. Each time you do so, the Guide marks a tally. Only the Guide knows what this tally means . . .
